I am Erica Valker, the Founder of SERENE CBD, and this is the true story of how CBD helped save my life.
I was living in Southern California in 2010, leading a fairly normal life working in the restaurant business while pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. As the Cannabis industry started to boom around that time, I also began making premium, gourmet organic cannabis infused edibles for local delivery companies (they were delicious!).
Then seemingly, one day it all changed. I fell extremely ill to an unknown affliction – having extremely pain, brain inflammation and siezures – and was immediately hospitalized. Little did I know at the time that I had a severe case of chronic late stage Lyme Disease that would completely debilitate me over time and nearly take my life on multiple occasions.
Over a several year period, the Lyme infection would cause me struggle daily with pain, siezures, tremors, fatigue and neurological disorders. I went from being a vibrant, happy, healthy go-getter in my 20’s to complete debilitation. I couldn’t walk and needed a walker, frequently couldn’t speak or communicate, often couldn’t eat and most nights I could not sleep. Every day I was having extraordinary bouts of pain that no pain pill could control and almost every other week, I was going to the ER with severe tremors and siezures that couldn’t be stopped even by the ER doctors.
To control my pain and siezures, my team of doctors had me try every pharma drug they could think of but nothing they prescribed would help. In fact, most of it made me far more sick. We were spending literally tens of thousands of dollars on medical bills, treatments and tons of prescriptions that were not working at all and my condition was deteriorating.
After I had given up on western medicine by about 2013, I turned to my expertise in cannabis and began to self medicate. This was a turning point in my journey for wellness. I was previously well aware of the medicinal effects & benefits of cannabis but didn’t realize the full extent until I was forced to figure out a more safe and natural way to treat my condition. I began taking my own edibles as needed more frequently but the problem was that it was hard to control dosing and I didn’t want to eat a cookie every time I needed to medicate.
To find a better solution, we hit dozens of dispensaries in California looking for the best and most pure cannabis products on the market but had a hard time finding products we could trust. We didn’t know what was in half the stuff – some were produced with chemicals like butane, some surely had pesticides or mold while others had things like corn syrup, gluten or soy…all things I was sensitive to with my condition. We often didn’t know what we are really getting and most of it didn’t work.
Then I was introduced to a great Lyme literate doctor in San Diego, Dr James Novak. Dr Novak recommended a manufacturer of a medical cannabis oil that was high in CBD, safe, pure, effective and dosable. This would change my life forever – this time in a good way.
I began taking the CBD tinctures every day for a variety of symptoms – pain, inflammation, tremors – and guess what? It WORKED! I had a long path back to wellness but finally found something that would help me. By taking measured CBD doses every day I could sleep, eat, my pain was manageable and it was controlling my seizure activities. At the onset of a seizure I no longer had to ride it out or go to the ER – I would simply take several sprays of the CBD and the seizure would stop in just a few seconds. CBD didn’t cure my illness but over time I could control my symptoms and would start to get my life back!
